Training Principles
In my own hockey career I was able to achieve very significant improvements by following these 3 guiding principles:
SPECIFICITY
A cornerstone of my training methods are based on the principle that the best way to improve any skill is to train for the particular skill as precisely and accurately as possible and according to how it is actually required in game situations. This means training as much as possible with hockey sticks, pucks and skates in game-like conditions. Trainings and exercises can be designed to simulate real game situations as closely as possible, but without the necessity of being at a rink.
CONSISTENCY
Improvement requires repetitive practice over an extended period of time. Hockey is a very fast-paced game, requiring split-second skilled execution. As a result, hockey skills need to be learned to the extent that they become instinctive. This requires consistent training.
FOCUS
To gain the maximum benefit a player needs to have a solid understanding of the what, why, when, and how of skills and game strategies. My instruction and drills are designed to challenge the participant mentally as well as physically. They must focus fully on the task at hand. The ability to maintain focus and concentration is often a factor that turns a good player into an impact player. My trainings strengthen the players’ ability to concentrate.
